Fun Facts
- Pi, played by Suraj Sharma, was never in the boat with a live tiger. Most of the tiger was high-tech CGI technology and only some scenes like the tiger swimming in the water had a real tiger used. There were 4 Bengal tigers kept on set for references. Sharma had to sit for hours watching the tigers so his fear would appear genuine.
- Visual effects supervisor, Bill Westenhoffer, says the tiger which took a year to create, was so real that the filmmakers had to prove to the government of India that it was computer-generated because they wanted to make sure no tigers were harmed during filming.
- Along with the tigers, there was also one hyena kept on set for reference.
- Suraj Sharma didn't know how to swim before he was cast as Pi.
- The largest wave tank in the world was created for the ocean scenes. It was set in an abandoned airport in Taiwan.
- Tobey Maguire was originally cast as the reporter but in early 2012 he was cut so that the cast would be entirely international.
